History

For decades, the Mamoní Valley has faced the threat of illegal logging and extensive cattle ranching, which have driven deforestation and the uncontrolled expansion of agriculture. These activities have put this key ecosystem within the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor at risk, harming its biodiversity and disrupting its role as a natural bridge between North and South America.
In response, conservation-minded individuals began acquiring key land parcels in 2005 to protect the forest and encourage its regeneration. Over time, strategies evolved—what started as a blend of agroforestry and conservation gradually shifted into a fully dedicated preservation model. Establishing a nonprofit organization in 2014 marked a turning point, reinforcing a long-term commitment to protecting the valley.

Today, the Mamoní Valley Preserve is dedicated to safeguarding the region’s biodiversity and maintaining its critical role in ecological connectivity. Since the 2021 restructuring, which strengthened MVP’s conservation strategy and leadership, the organization has expanded partnerships with local communities to combat illegal activities, conserve land, promote reforestation, and protect the valley’s ecosystems.

Looking ahead, the Preserve is establishing itself as a model for sustainable rainforest conservation, ensuring that this unique landscape remains a refuge for biodiversity and future generations.
