When people think of rainforests, they usually picture towering trees, colorful birds, or elusive jaguars. Flowers rarely make the list. Yet according to biologist David George Haskell, flowering plants are the quiet architects behind many of Earth’s richest ecosystems, including tropical rainforests.
Flowers didn’t simply add color to the world, they changed how life worked. By offering nectar, pollen, scents, and striking colors, flowering plants transformed insects from hungry plant-eaters into willing partners. This partnership sparked an explosion of biodiversity, giving rise to many of the pollinators we know today and creating new opportunities for countless other species.
Rainforests are one of the greatest examples of this collaboration. Every blooming tree, vine, orchid, and understory plant is part of an intricate network linking insects, birds, mammals, fungi, and microbes. Remove enough flowers from the system, and the web begins to unravel.
Haskell argues that flowering plants have survived dramatic environmental changes for more than 100 million years thanks to one remarkable trait: diversity. Rather than relying on a single strategy, they constantly adapt, cooperate, and evolve. Protecting that genetic diversity may be one of our best tools for helping ecosystems remain resilient in an uncertain future.
In places like Mamoní Valley Preserve, protecting the rainforest means protecting much more than trees. It also means caring for the thousands of flowering plants that feed wildlife, support pollinators, and help the whole forest thrive. They may not be the first thing we notice, but without flowers, the rainforest wouldn’t be the same.
